Touch the suction line schrader valve with a small screwdriver. If there is still pressure in the system operate compressor for a few more minutes and recheck. When no more pressure exists or a vacuum is noted, all refrigerant has been pumped into the outdoor unit and is safe to cut lines and remove components inside the home. Remember to close the suction side service valve also as if the compressor has leaky valves, the refrigerant will leak out of it. lc

During prper winterization, the water in the bottom drain is usually "blown" out with compressed air. How this happens, is that a pipe with a schrader valve (the same type of valve on a ture intertube) is inserted into a pipe that is threaded into the pipe below the skimmer (with the leaf basket removed) An air compressor is then used to fill the tube with air. The air forces the water out of the entire pipe. Bubbles will come up from the drain when all of the water has been blown out of the pipe. The pressure of the air being in the pipe keeps the water from flowing back into the pipe. Hope this answers your question.

Refrigerant... Freon is a trademark of DuPont, and it's only Freon if made and marketed by them under that name. That being said, find your AC compressor. I'm assuming you're doing the DIY thing, and not doing it the complete way (which involves a RRR machine, vacuum test, etc.). There'll be two hoses going to the compressor - one is larger than the other. Follow the large one back until you find a schrader valve - it'll usually be capped with a black plastic cap. Take the cap off. Crank your vehicle, and set the AC to the Max AC setting. Connect your can to the schrader valve (if you made a mistake and put it on the high pressure side, it won't fit properly). Discharge the can. Repeat as needed, ensuring the level doesn't go past the red line on the can.... these "gauges" on the cans aren't particularly accurate, but it's all you have to go off of.
