The display is black and white.
A screen/monitor that only shows one color except for black. Like a black and white TV or a green and black cell-phone screen.
On a color palette, it would be white then black. White is the absence of color. Black is a mix of all colors.
Well, sort of. In the touch screen, you can see the pictures in color but in the reading screen it comes out in black and white. But overall no, because the touch screen is about 1/6 the size of the whole Nook.
you can't make the screen black and white, you need to have webcam effects in order to do that.

If the screen is actually white, it will absorb all light and appear black to your eye. If the screen appears white in normal light, all light will be reflected resulting in the combination of green and red (brown/yellow).
