What really makes the movie disturbing is that the director abused actress Shelley Duvall to have her in a constant state of terror because her performance wasn't good enough. So when you watch the movie, she isn't acting. She's actually scared. I wonder how that made Stephen King feel?
I think it's because it manages to portray the emotions of the characters extremely accurately, and makes the audience feel the same way. Because the novel 'The Shining' was excellent, and the plot of the movie is adapted from this. Only loosely in cases though, which is why it's a good movie and not an excellent movie.
