This is a very common question asked in the field of physics: basically, transmitted light from the sun is made up of a spectrum of colors, the longest wavelenghts of light are at the red end and the shortest wavelengths are on the blue end. When this transmitted light from the sun reaches our atmosphere, it collides with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. The color with the shorter wavelength (blue color) is scattered more by this collision *
