A sphincter is basically a ring shape of muscle usually at the end of a hollow organ in the body such as the bladder or encircling an opening from the body such as the anus. In its contracted state it will hold back the contents and when voluntarily relaxed itr will release them. The bladder (part of the urinary system) is controlled by a sphincter.

The muscle that controls the diameter of an opening is called a sphincter muscle. Sphincter muscles are circular bands of smooth muscle that encircle openings in various parts of the body, such as the digestive system and urinary tract. Examples include the anal sphincter and the pyloric sphincter in the stomach.
