When someone receives or is begotten by God's Holy Spirit, think of it as the beginning of a spiritual development akin to our embryo and fetal development. We are given direction and strength to avoid sin, but still have free will and are weak that we inevitably will still sin. If we repent, these sins are blotted out.
If the person refuses to repent and falls back into their old ways, he/she will lose the Holy Spirit as God abhors sin. This is known as the unpardonable sin as the person once begotten has freely given it up. There is no other covering for their sins and their fate is sealed.
The vast majority of humans will NOT receive the Holy Spirit is their lifetimes. Only the 'Elect' or 'Firstfruits' will and they are few compared to the entirety. In the 2nd Judgement Process, all others will be offered the Holy Spirit to become sons and daughters in the God Family. God chooses when as He knows what is best for His potential children. Not favoritism but 'agape' love.
