Salmon and thimble berries are not only extremely similar in appearance, but both can vary in color from orange to red. Their true distinction is with their leaves. Salmon berry leaves are smaller and spear shaped, where as thimble berry leaves are larger and have several spears like a maple tree leaf. I recommend the book "Wild Harvest" by Terry Domico for more information about edible plants in the Pacific Northwest.

To determine if a berry is poisonous, you can research the specific type of berry to see if it is known to be toxic. You can also consult a field guide or expert to help identify the berry and its potential toxicity. Additionally, you can look for warning signs such as bright colors, bitter taste, or unusual markings on the berry. If you are unsure, it is best to avoid eating the berry.
