So technically, The Vampire Diaries novels came before Twilight novels, but Twilight beat The Vampire Diaries to the punch with a film first.

No, The Vampire Diaries came out in 1991, Twilight came out in 2005.... To be honest, Vampire Diaries is better. Second person here- No, I too think vampire diaries is much better... Dont hate me for saying that. I also think 'The Vampire Diaries' is much better. The characters are more interesting and the plot is generally better constructed.
