In general, certified pharmacy techs (CPhT) make more money than uncertified technicians. Currently the fee for taking the test is a $129 one-time fee (as of March 2008).

Different places offer different rates and most of the times, your education background or working background for this field also sets on how you should be charged with it. Of course certified PT who have good experience could earn good money in a good company while it wont be the same for newbies and those without certification but with educational background.

CPhTs with a college degree (associates or bachelors) may or may not be paid more. This is entirely up to the employer, your specific degree, and your experience. In general I would expect a 2 year degree would make little difference in salary; passing the certification exam would be more important to most pharmacists who would be hiring you. A 4 year degree in a related field (business, science, computer) might get you a slightly better salary than a non-degreed certified technician.

CERTIFICATION for pharmacy techs is currently only required in a handful of states, but the trend is towards requiring certification, especially in hospital or clinical settings. Local independent pharmacies will often hire uncertified techs more readily than chain pharmacies or hospitals, but pharmacists do usually prefer to hire CPhTs (or techs who are interested in becoming certified at some point).

Most hospitals, as policy and/or state law, either require certification as a prerequisite to hiring, or will expect the tech to become certified within 1 year or so of hire date (some will even help pay the cost of the exam or training). In my experience, upon passing the exam, most CPhTs will get a small raise immediately, and get better raises in the future.

Wages vary, but in general uncertified techs may make minimum wage up to $10/hr or so, but certified techs will paid a few dollars more per hour. In larger cities techs may make $12-$20/hour, but there are no set wages (depends on state, location, employer, and experience).

Many retail chains (CVS) etc encourage tech certification and do pay their certified techs more.

If you are serious about a career as a pharmacy tech, I highly recommend certification. The test does not cost much, and you can get the study books and prepare yourself for the exam. I have helped several techs study (mostly the math portion) and all have passed. Working in a hospital or drugstore will also help you become familiar with the terminology and medications. If you have never worked in a pharmacy, you might consider a short course at a local tech school to help you prepare for the certification exam.

After certification, you must typically complete approximately 15 hours of continuing education (C.E.) requirements every 2 years to keep your certification. Free and/or paid online or written exams and courses may be used to complete these requirements. There may be a small fee to be paid every 2 years also, but it is reasonable.
