Like most laws, this one too varies from state to state. But, yes...in all of the states 500 dollars IS grand theft. In California, the amount is 400 dollars, but, there is a bill going through congress to raise the grand theft or felony amount to 800 dollars, due to the over crowding of the prisons in that state. However...at this time, 500 is right in the category of GRAND.
