You can either create a map or press F3. Pressing F3 will show you your coordinates, the biome you're in, and a whole lot more.
You will tell if you see a big button called Mods, and you will see something on the right called Minecraft Forge - (number here) mods loadedand e.t.c
To make a LAN server, there should be a button in the menu. The join, you go the the multiplayer button in the main menu. If there are any that you can join, it will tell you.

It updates Minecraft to the latest released version.
At the bottom right of the minecraft homepage there is a download button.

On the minecraft homepage click on the download button below the buy now button and then select the client you have (Windows, Mac etc) then download it, run it and it should download minecraft.
Placing items in Minecraft is usually done with the right mouse button.
It will re install your minecraft back to its original state.
