"Birthday" by Marc Chagall
I think the meaning is: our window on the world is capitalism (right half of painting) - business shapes the way the world looks, its streets, shops, opportunities and desires. And it's inescapable. If you look outside the world of capitalism (left side of painting), your focus is drawn to the central figure - the motivations of men (and woman) in pursuit of advantage and opportunity. Not sure how accurate this is but I find it satisfying. T
Put it this way: "Why did Leonardo da Vinci name this painting "La Gioconda"? Very simple. It is usually known as the Mona Lisa, which is short for Madonna Lisa (the woman's first name). She is better known as the third wife of a merchant from Florence named Francesco di Bartholommeo del Giocondo. "La Gioconda" is Italian for "the Giocondo woman" (-do is masculine, -da is feminine). So we might call the painting Mrs. Giocondo, or Mme Gioconda, or Frau Giocondo, or Signora Gioconda.
This is a curious question about such a painting. Is there one meaning, THE meaning? Perhaps, but what would you like to see? A beautiful woman, placid, but deep in thought. She is troubled perhaps by her lover whom she expects to see soon. Or her reverie was disturbed for a moment by a group of noisy lakeside kids, but she is just before turning to greet her friends with a smile? Kuroda has left you with a gorgeous impressionist portrait from which you can create your own story.
I'm not sure if this will help but I just bought a print of this piece... It seems to have 2 signatures one in each lower corner. One looks very authentic. If u'd like to see photos and see if u can make out the signature(s)... Email me novuscera@gmail.com
From what I can tell, the painting you are describing is originally painted by a woman named Barbara Lemley. It is very similar to Enstrom's except in Lemley's the man is not wearing black and his hands are not touching his face. I have yet to figure out how Boobia fits into it all!!
Woman's Home Companion ended in 1957.
Woman's Home Companion was created in 1873. It was a popular American women's magazine that focused on homemaking, fiction, and journalism.
Compañero(man) or compañera (woman)
Rhoda did painting the man from Grace in different colored shirts, meaning she handcolored them to purchasers requests. I did find out that the female version of "Grace" is called Gratitude and has not authentic connection to the picture Grace. Some other person simply tried to create a complimentary "female" piece. Google search "Gratitude" and you will find more info.
