Yes there have been keyboards developed that did not follow the standard QWERTY layout, however they did not catch on too well.

there are two tabs one on each of the letters j and f. you would put both of your indexfingers (Pointer Fingers) on them and line the rest of your fingers on the other six keys
The keys are lined up on the keyboard the way they are (in qwerty format) because when typewriters were still being used that keyboard format prevented them from jamming. We do not use this format because it is effective, we use it because that is what many people are used to. However, a new type of keyboard is being made which people have been said to type 212 words per minute on, but this would take a lot of effort to switch all computer users over to this new type of keyboard.
Qwerty. If you look on your keyboard, you'll see the letter keys Q-W-E-R-T-Y lined up in a row. If you need more information, try looking up research on the internet.
