They don't use this word before the fourth book, but of course Lucius Malfoy, Peter Pettigrew and Severus Snape (who appear in books 1-3) are indeed Death-Eaters. (Severus Snape was a death eater, then changed sides.)

Harry potter's sixth book is about finding horcruxes [souls divided into diffrent parts and stored in objects] of Voldemort and the rise of a new death eater Draco Malfoy it also has some romance such as Lavender and Ron and some jealousy of Hermoine, Ginny unexpectedly with Harry. This book tells us that finally Harry was right that Snape did not leave the death eater gang and had finally gotten the real trust of Dumbledore and he had made snape the defense against dark arts and slughorn the new professor the potions master.
