One of the more famous is a story written by an out of work carpenter named Arthur Whitaker who sent his story to Conan Doyle in hopes of a collaboration. Conan Doyle paid a sum of money for the typewritten manuscript and filed it away then in the 1940's long after Conan Doyle's death it was discovered and published as an actual Sherlock Holmes story. The truth was discovered, and apology printed, but the story remains as a famous pastiche of the great detective.
Actually, no there is not a fictional detective named "Sherlock not Holmes."
But I'm pretty sure that there is some kid that made that up some where in the world.

In the first book, a study in scarlet Sherlock Holmes and Watson meet and share an apartment so that the rent wasn't expensive. Watson later finds out that Holmes is a detective, and they both later go to the crime scene where Mr. Drebber died. Holmes discovers all this stuff at the crime scene. Later in the book Holmes discovers that Mr. Strangerson was also killed. In the end Sherlock Holmes finds out that the actual killer was............................................. thats the end of part 1 in the book. You might say The 'Gloria Scott' is the beginning of Sherlock Holmes for it is in this story that Sherlock Holmes first turned his attention to solving crime.

The reason people are drawn to this particular character is probably because he was the unlikely detective, a cocaine addicted man with an obsession for studying crime.
