The Hound of the Baskervilles is a crime novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialised in the Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely onDartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound. From Wikipedia, linked below
In chapter 4 of the novel, Holmes recognised that the type (font) contained in the anonymous message was from the London Times, and found the very article that included most of the words that were cut out to form the message though the word 'moor' was printed by hand. "The detection of types is one of the most elementary branches of knowledge to the special expert in crime . . . ." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (By the way, this is one of only eight times Holmes used the word 'elementary' in the entire series.)
i would say adventure/ fantasy/crime Young Adult Fiction
It's the fifth Sherlock Holmes book. It's about a very rich man named Charles Baskerville who died of fright, apparently. His nephew, Henry Baskerville, is to come to England to claim his inheritance and take over the estate. There's a family curse about a demon dog who terrorizes every Baskerville, and it's said that the dog was what frightened Charles so much that he died. Holmes is too busy to go out to the moor to do the case, so Watson is sent instead.
Of the sixty stories, there are eight where no crime is committed. In my opinion, of the 52 remaining cases, these are the crimes ranked by frequency of the most serious crime: Murder (30), Theft (6), Attempted murder (4), Fraud (4), Abduction (3), Blackmail (2), Attempted robbery (1), Espionage (1), Treason (1). I hasten to add that in many of these cases the crimes would have escalated without Holmes' intervention. Of course, there are those un-chronicled cases; I believe Holmes says in 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' that there are some 500 cases of capital importance which he handled, and there are over 100 that Watson mentions with few details given.
The brutal murder of Sir Charles Baskerville.
Hugo Baskerville kidnapped a yeoman's daughter with whom he intended to have his way. She escaped him, however.
