What I did was unplug the power cord from the back and then hit the eject again when it was plugged in again and it worked.
No the button is only to eject a game disc or DVD. If you don't have a disc in you can still press the button without hurting the PS3
Hold Eject button down for 6 seconds (while PS3 is on): force disc to eject. I was able to get a disc out by turning off the PS3 by unplugging it and then try holding down the eject button for 6 seconds when turned on and plugged in.

Put a game into it and it will turn on. There also a button on the console on the far right for the PS3 slim models. It will also turn on if you eject a disc that is already in the machine.
The AOSS button is located on the back of the PS3 . The button is small and red and is located right above the two Ethernet ports.
Unplug it and then plug it back in and press eject that often releases the disc
