Normal meteors enter the atmosphere at relatively high angles (ie. plunging downwards deep into the atmosphere), while earth grazing meteors enter at low angles, in the most extreme cases only skimming the outer edges where the air is not very dense. Because of this they survive longer, and can cover over 100 degrees of sky in some cases.
