In a way, there is. Author Bill Whittle once wrote that the sinking of the Titanic was a matter of a critical eighteen seconds. The Titanic was an ocean liner that sank on its maiden voyage with great loss of life, including some of the richest and most glamorous people on Earth at the time. Crossing the North Atlantic Ocean, late at night, lookouts observed a shape looming in the dark, and the lookout called "ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD!" Hearing this, the helmsman turned sharply left to avoid it. But the lookout's message was misunderstood; the lookout said "ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD", and the helmsman understood that the iceberg was TO THE RIGHT, ahead. As the Titanic swerved to the left, a spur of ice ripped open the side of the ship. It's amazing that it was caused by eighteen seconds.

If the lookouts had seen the iceberg 18 seconds EARLIER, the Titanic's turn would have been enough to avoid the iceberg completely, or at least, to suffer a much less severe rupture of the hull. Titanic was built with watertight compartments to protect it in exactly these conditions, but the iceberg cut open several adjacent compartments.

If the lookouts had seen the iceberg just a few seconds LATER, the helmsman wouldn't have had time to turn the ship at all, in which case the Titanic would have smashed directly into the iceberg head-on. This would have crushed much of the bow of the ship, and punctured a couple of the watertight compartments - but it wouldn't have punctured enough of the hull to cause the ship to sink. The Titanic would probably have limped into port, and may not ever have sailed again - but it would have survived.

THAT is the "Mystery of the Titanic."
