Is there a need for the PlayStation?

Absolutely not.

It depends what you use to define the word need. There was a market for the item and other consoles. Product sales indicate that individuals have made purchases in the millions for each of the different models with hundreds of millions sold. Games, DLC and accessories to support the products have even greater sales. The economy needs the sales and production of these products for this multi billion dollar industry to continue or some replacement type of product. Years ago before the world's economy depended on the industry there might have only been a desire, but it is at a point where they are needed to at least be replaced by a new desired product.
