Diablo 2 is an old game now, Windows 7 and Vista often struggle to play older games. However there are many patches online that can get not only Diablo 2, but even the original Diablo running on modern systems and Windows 7.

I use vista and I didn't need to patch it. Once you install just update to current version all should work perfectly.

They are "compatible" in the sense that many applications that run on Windows XP will run on Windows Vista.
Many applications and games written for or compatible with Windows 98 will run on Windows Vista.
If you are asking if you can run Windows Vista on 256 MB of RAM, then yes. However, the Windows installer will not allow you to install on 256 MB of RAM without a patch. If you are asking if you can use Vista on a computer using 256 MB memory modules, then yes.
Yes ofcourse, Windows Vista is upgraded version of Windows XP. Obviously it can run Windows XP applications.
Windows Vista
Windows Vista can already run most XP applications, with no need for any additional software.
If I remember rightly: Right click the Icon and select "Run as XP" You will most likely get a warning, click OK, then it should run. I know it is possible to make it run as I have a copy running on vista.
