Is there a portable air conditioner that does not need an exhaust vent?

Air conditioners generate a lot of heat, so normally it would be counterproductive not to vent them. However, dehumidifiers are basically air conditioners that are not vented. Although they force water out of the air by cooling it, I learned from personal experience that they (or at least the model I had) heat an area more than they cool it.

However, there are multiple options you can use when exhausting the unit. One creative portable AC owner replaced his fireplace screen with a sheet of polycarbonate plastic that was custom cut to adapt to the exhaust hose fittings of his single hose portable air conditioner. This kind of installation will not work with a Dual hose air conditioner. But if you are a bit creative, there are many ways to exhaust the hot air created by a portable air conditioner.

Yes, they can work very well but you have to be aware of how to position them for best cooling effect: you can't just stand a portable air conditioning unit in the middle of the room, as if it was a room heater. Always place the portable AC unit next to a window opening (or similar) so that all (100%) of the hot air from the unit gets sent outside the room you are trying to cool. If you let any of the hot air from the unit get back into the room you will just be wasting electricity. There are some tricks to get the most out of a portable AC. First, insulate the exhaust hose. Even something simply like wrapping the exhaust hose with towels, or modifying a hot water heater insulation blanket to cover the exhaust hose can yield huge improvements in the performance of the air conditioner because the exhaust hose radiates a lot of heat back into the room during normal operation. Another hint - I nearly always recommend that our customers buy a dual hose portable air conditioner because they are more efficient and typically cool better than single hose units.

Yes, this is a great way to exhaust a single hose portable air conditioner. You would simply need to adapt the hose connections to the front of your fireplace. I have seen an installation where the front of the fireplace was sealed with a piece of plexiglas. The plexiglas had been custom cut to fit the portable AC's fittings. THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH A DUAL HOSE PORTABLE AC UNLESS YOU OPERATE IT IN SINGLE HOSE MODE. The reason is that the hot exhaust air will pool in the fireplace itself and be drawn back into the unit through the intake hose if it was installed.
