I think all dedicated ebook readers are very expensive, their prices are prohibitive to the average consumer. But the next best thing would be a relatively cheap subnotebook (EeePC series, HP MiniNote, Libretto U100). Aside from being able to do basic to advanced PC tasks, it can be used as an ebook reader with an Adobe PDF reader or any similar software. Subnotebooks weigh in the 1 kg region, plus or minus a few 100 grams.
It may be a bit cumbersome to use it in bed or in your favorite couch, but hey, you'll get the hang of it after finishing a chapter of your ebook.
