Well, in my opinion, the only film that comes close is Red Planet (2000) with Val Kilmer, Carrie-Ann Moss and Tom Sizemore. It also, once again in my opinion, is a remake of Forbidden Planet (1956). Kilmer fills the role played by Edward Judd in "First Men". Carrie-Ann fills the role of Martha Hyer's character, and the role played by Lionel Jeffries is split between Sizemore and Terrence Stamp. The robot, AMEE, is what links Red Planet with Forbidden Planet, considering Forbidden Planet also had a robot with an affectionate identification; Robby. Also like Forbidden Planet, Red Planet has more than three characters, however the major focus comes down to the characters played by Kilmer, Moss, and Sizemore, which makes it similar to "First Men", which only had three major characters. I feel that, in terms of being a remake, Red Planet appropriately updates the astronauts destination to Mars, instead of the Moon. First Men in the Moon was made prior to the real-life moon landing. Considering no human being has set foot on Mars (yet), it seems that a modern version of the story "First Men" sets out to tell would update the location to a place in space that no one has set foot on. Another major similarity between Red Planet and "First Men" is the module from Red Planet and the sphere from "First Men". The module is spherical, however instead of railroad bumpers like in "First Men", the module in Red Planet has balloons to aid in its landing. The last major similarity is the native life of the Moon and Mars, both of which are insect-like; the Selenites in "First Men" and the nematoads in Red Planet. Of course one species is smarter than the other, but I hope you get my point. Call it "adaptation decay" if you will.
