The author wrote a sequel, but the publisher felt it didn't measured up to the original and would have needed extensive revisions or rethinking. Apparently author and publisher weren't able or haven't yet been able to see eye to eye on it, and the author can't publish a sequel without the original publisher's agreement. But the more interest there is in the book, the more likely something will happen, especially with books like Jeanne DuPrau's EMBER series becoming very popular and making it to the big screen.
