There is an item called a Hard Stone (introduced in the Generation II games) that boosts the power of Rock-type moves when it is held by a Pokemon.
The Hard Stone isn't an item that can be purchased in the game. It has to be found. In the latest games (X and Y at the time of this writing), Hard Stones can be found in the following places:
- Route 8
- Ambrette Town
- Glittering Cave
- Cyllage City
You will have to use rock smash to get it in all of those places. You can also get one through super training, or in battle. Sometimes wild Pokemon are holding one, specifically these types of Pokemon:
- Corsola
- Nosepass
- Aron
- Lairon
- Roggenrola
- Dwebble
