The word "workout" is a noun rather than a verb. The verb form is two words, so the sentence should read "This question is very difficult to work out."

Many people are confused by verbs that take an associated preposition such as up, out, in, down, etc. These verbs should ALWAYS be written as two separate words!! For example, you may see someone write that they want to "shutdown" a computer or "setup" a table, but this isn't correct - it should be "shut down" and "set up". Setupand shutdown ARE in fact valid words, but they're nouns even if they're pronounced the same way.
The best way to remember this distinction is to ask if you can make the past tense ("-ed") or gerund ("-ing") by simply adding that suffix. If the result is, well, just not English, you should use the two-word form. For example, which is correct?
- "Please pickup the basket."
- "Please pick up the basket."
If "pickup" were correct, the past tense and gerund would have to be "pickupped" and "pickupping" - neither of which are even remotely valid English words! However "picked up" and "picking up" are correct English, so you should use the two-word form "pick up".
