Tears are produced by the lacrimal gland. The reason people tend to shed tears as a reaction to a tragedy, is because when someone hears the news, the lacrimal gland causes the salty fluid known as tears to build up in the eyes, and fall.
However, the same thing can occur when there's good news, such as a birth of a child or a wedding.
