Australia did not acquire its independence from the US. The US has never had any claim to any part of Australia. Both countries were initially colonised by Britain, and each, in turn, acquired its independence from Britain.

You should be able to log on to Xbox live just fine with a US Xbox in Australia, by using and ethernet connection, or buying the Wireless adapter. Some games bought in Australia may not work on your US Xbox, you will need to buy games that do not have region encoding, so they will work on any console. Australia is not in the US
Australia has never been conquered by any foreign power. The US and Australia have been allies for ~200 years and American troops have been supported by Australian troops in every international conflict since WWI.
The whole world seemed to be getting on the anti-Vietnam War band wagon, and any nation that disagreed with the US, quite naturally disagreed with any ally of the US...which included Australia.
Australia was (and to some point might still be) the only nation on earth that was like the US "used to be like." Visiting Australia in 1970 would be like entering a time machine and visiting America (the US) in 1930. Australia was a wonderful early America back in the Vietnam War days. Partly for this reason, many movie makers from the US go to Australia to make films. Canada will do, but Australia is not as frozen as Canada, and has climate (for film making scenes) similar to America (US).
on a regular atlas, Australia is southeast from the US
