Applebee's was originally called "TJ Applebee's Edibles and Elixirs". The name "Appleby's" was taken from the phonebook, but had already been registered as a restaurant in Atlanta, so the spelling was changed and the "TJ" (for TJ Palmer, one of the founders) and "Edibles and Elixirs" were added to avoid trademark infringement.

Yes, there is a big story behind the name Applebees. You see, 1600 years ago, Rome was a big civilization. They took advantage of their big civilization, and made large trade routes with many far off countries. The most important country that they didn't trade with, was Zimbabwe. You see, in Latin (the official language of Rome), "appelum beesai" roughly translates to "Baboon Butt caramels". To import from Zimbabwe, the Roman's had to use a butter knife to cut into the hasenpfeffer mine. There, they would take the butter knife, and cut into Zimbabwe. Then they would capture the baboons by hooking a dollar bill on to a fishing rod. After that, they lure the baboons in by slowly reeling the line in. Once the wind is perfect, and the time is right, the baboons will then pounce. Right when the baboons are in the air, they then would quickly yank the dollar bill away. When the baboon landed, they would press their shiny buttons, and the baboons would be trapped in the cage. Then, the cages were brought to the hasenpfeffer mine, and loaded on to a conveyor belt back to Rome. On the conveyor belt, the baboons were then seasoned, and choked to death with carbon-monoxide. When the cages came up, the baboons' butts were then cut off. The rest of this primate was discarded, burned, or even fed to the peasants! After the butts are cut off, they are filleted, broiled, and then packaged. Now the "appelum beesai" is finished. Then, the "appelum beesai" is shipped to the restaurant "Rome LaMone". The "appelum beesai" was then served directly to the customers. This was a big hit! In fact, this was such a big hit, when Rome formed an alliance with the Huns, the Huns were told about the "appelum beesai", and given the recipe. The Huns then passed the word about "appelum beesai" to the Saxans, and gave them the recipe. Then, the Romans, the Huns, and the Saxans were all enjoying this dilegacy. When the Saxons took over England, and the English language was formed, the Saxons were never told what "appelum beesai" meant. Because they knew no Latin, they called it Applebee, and made it an official word. Soon after that, an Italian restuaraunt called "Delighs Italiano". Then "Delighs Italiano" was brought over to the new world (America), and was so popular. The Applebee was such an addicting food, full of flavor, the Applebee took over the restuaraunt. "Delighs Italiano" was then renamed "Applebees". Then the restuaraunt prospered for 100's of years, and is still prospering today.
