Missouri's state cat is the mountain lion.
I have not taken a cat on a mountain hike but I have hiked several miles while hunting and my cat followed me the whole time. Cats usually don't take too well to being on a leash, (yours might), and you will probably feel that you need to watch it the whole time. This may detract from your commune with nature. But if your cat is a constant companion and listens well and will not stray then go for it. Have a nice hike. Bring enough food and water for the cat and if the temperatures are going to be low make sure that it can stay warm at night. If it is like my cat, that won't be a problem. It will find you and curl up for warmth which will be advantageous to you both. Additional Info: I too haven't been on a mountain hike with my cat, but he goes everywhere I go and I hike through my woods and track animals down to a lake, so I can watch them interact alone. He sticks with me and is silent as mouse! If he gets distracted, which does happen, I just look back and ask him what he's doing and he comes running, bounding over logs and stumps. If we are close to the animals a hand gesture usually works, to bring him up, to watch the action with me. Then he strolls back to the cabin, as though he is the king of all he surveys. It is good for both of us and he gets to enjoy the hunt without killing anything. When we get back I help him get his fur cleaned up and he is one happy cat, as for me I'm tired, but have enjoyed the wild animals and my tame ones too. But just as a caution, many cats who are very comfortable in their usual enviroment, don't adapt well to a change, and if you don't have some form of control, and I agree leashes are hard on everyone involved if the cat is determined to be free, you could lose your cat in the blink of an eye. The wilderness is no place for a domesicated animal of any kind, including a cat. They have a wide range of predators, and are not really aware of it. The way I found out my cat was hiking with me, was I found him clambering out of a deep hole, he'd fallen into because it was covered by leaves. He caught some roots on his way down, and I heard the fuss! Gave us both a good scare. That is why now he stays with me and I try to keep him in my range of site. Better too safe than sorry. My cat is a member of my family, I wouldn't let anything happen to my family.
