from what I know, the white tiger's fur comes from a genetic mutation that is very rare, hence it is very difficult to breed. White tigers have little chance of surviving in the wild, because their white fur does not camoflauge with their surroundings.

This is practically the same thing as white lions, white bears(if there are such things) and so forth.
