hot liquids in styrofoam cups release toxic carcinogens into the beverage . the heat leeches them into the liquid. avoid them for coffee or tea etc.
The two problems with polystyrene materials, which includes styrofoam cups, is that it takes an extremely long time to decompose (compared with other materials) and tends to crumble and become a big source of water-borne trash, potentially harming different kinds of animals.
Putting the cup in the freezer keeps ice from melting. Those cups will slow down the melting rate, but if you've got ice at room temperature it's gonna melt eventually. Having said that, ice will melt slowest in a styrofoam cup.
