Christopher Columbus might have viewed the people he encountered by asking the people where he was and if it was a shortcut to a continent!!
Since Columbus always believed he had found a way to the Indies and never considered that he might have found an "undiscovered" continent, if he crew had told someone that he didn't discover America, he would have said they were telling the truth.
