I play violin. Usually, when the price is high, it's made out of a better material and it is better made. For string instruments, hand made instruments are more expensive than machine produced. Also, the little black lining along the side of the instrument is actually there to help the instrument expand without breaking it. More expensive instruments will probably have that. Cheaper ones will have them painted on. Also, the sound quality is generally better on more expensive instruments. Older instruments will be more expensive.
