No. Those are 2 different ranks. Master Sgt. is an E-8 while Sgt. Major is an E-9 in pay grade. A master sgt. is next in command before a Sgt. Major if he/she is sick or on vacation but is still addressed by the proper rank he/she wears.
some times, but usually as Sgt, regard less of rank, [exceptions] first sgt, or a sgt major, there addressed as first sgt or TOP and sgt major, are addressed as sgt major.
Where a sergeant fits in the chain of command depends on his rank, since there are several levels of sergeants. Sergeant (SGT) - probably team leader Staff Sergeant (SSG) - probably squad leader Sergeant First Class (SFC) - probably platoon leader First Sergeant (1SG) - probably company First Sergeant Command Sergeant Major (CSM) - probably battalion CSM Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) - The top enlisted person in the US Army
The rank higher than a Command Sergeant Major (CSM) in the U.S. Army is the Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA). The SMA serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the Army Chief of Staff and represents the interests of enlisted soldiers at the highest levels of leadership. This position is unique and holds a distinct role compared to other command sergeant majors within the Army.
Siegfried Sassoon held the rank of captain during World War I. After the war, he was promoted to the rank of major.

No a Sgt is concerned a non-commissioned member of the army. A sgt is an average rank of a typical solider level, where a general is the highest rank in the army. There are several types of Sgt's in the US army - but never is any Sgt rank higher than a General.
SP4 is a Specialist, E-4, which is one step (rank) above a PFC, Private 1st class, E-3 and one step (rank) below a Sergeant, Sgt., E-5. A Private is an E-1 which is the rank most soldiers get out of boot camp. I still believe that this basic rank structure is the same as it was when I was in the Army 35 years ago. I don't know if the rank of Corporal is still used as it was or is an E-4 or at least a rank above a PFC. A Sgt., E-5 is usually a squad leader but depending on the staffing or circumstances could act as a platoon Sgt. This position is usually held by an E-6 and sometimes an E-7. The head NCO, Non-Commisioned Officer of an Army Company, is usually an E-8 which is a 1st Sergeant. The 'top dog' NCO in a battalion or Unit is the Command Sergeant Major. I think I got it right.
It is not a question of power, it is a question of rank. A Lt is a commissioned officer and is of higher rank than a Sgt. who is a non-commissioned officer.
Between Sergeant (SGT) and Master Sergeant (MSGT) in the U.S. Army, there is one rank: Staff Sergeant (SSG). Therefore, there is a total of one rank between SGT and MSGT.
yes he was in the army
No only the commander can take his rank only the sgt can recommend.
