Is there such a thing as heat lightning?

In short, yes, there is such a thing as heat lightning. Heat lightning is often seen on hot summer days, hence the name. It is usually out in the distance or on the horizon and usually comes from distance thunderstorms. They are not accompanied by sound because they are too far away. "Traditional" lightning occurs when negatively charged particles in the clouds bump into each other to eventually form lightning. Heat lightning can often be signs of a thunderstorm coming in the near future.

"Heat Lightning" is really just lightning in a distant storm. The reason you can't hear it is because the sound of thunder can travel approximately 25 miles. When light can travel a lot farther. The reason you can see the lightning sometimes from far far away is because the light can reflect off of dust or aerosol particles in the air.
