Turkey is an excellent source of protein and often a viable alternative for dogs who are allergic or sensitive to other sources like beef, chicken, lamb etc. where that "danger factor" comes in is when dogs who usually do not get anything but dry kibble are overfed with turkey skin during the holidays. the skin is very fatty and can cause pancreatitis.

So....the meat is fine but no skin.

It is ok if it is given in small amounts.

Pork ( especially salted) try and keep off.

Of Course Dogs Love meat, and they can have it but not too much like their normal dinner size meal.

Dogs can have white meat, so yes that includes turkey, but they shouldn't have too much, or turkey or other white meats with lots of added things. Red mat, such as pork, bacon, and others are bad for dogs. Avoid giving them any raw meet, or meat with bones i it, that the dog could choke on.

Is Thanksgiving turkey bad for dogs?

Three dogs --- Turkey is totally their favorite food. They absolutely love it. But.....they all get diarrhea every Thanksgiving when they get turkey (chicken and other meats do not do this). I am going to cut back on the amount I give them - and try and give them only white meat - no dark meat or skin - to cut down on the fat. Hope this helps because they really love it - and I always have a lot left over. cjs

Is Turkey bad for your shih tzu?

Turkey is not good for dogs. It contains L-Tryptophan which is the same chemical that makes people sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner. Other foods that contain L-Tryoptophan are chicken, pork, cheese. These foods are okay for dogs when they are in dog food, but not when they came straight from your kitchen table.

Is Sodium Nitrate harmful as found in hot dogs and other processed meats?

There seems to be multiple opinions on the subject. Some say there's nothing wrong, others claim that children who eat too many hotdogs end up with lukemia. Processed meats aren't good for you and can be full of unwanted fats. Smoked meats are associated with bringing on migraines. I go by rule of thumb ... eating anything in moderation isn't all bad for you. If you just have it once in awhile that's OK, but if you live off it then you're in trouble. Buying ROASTED turkey from a Deli (having it sliced) is OK and the same goes for chicken, but stay away from the sausages or packaged sliced meats.
