The word "underprivileged" is used to describe a constellation of factors that often include:

• low income
• poverty
• decreased educational opportunities
• few employment opportunities
• lack of positive role model
• lack of a positive vision for change
• lack of hope that life can change
• in many instances, a lack of motivation
• a lack of motivation due to lack of information about HOW to change life's circumstances

While being part of an "underprivileged" group is difficult, it is NOT an insurmountable condition. With the right mindset, determination, hard work, hope, and positive attitude, many people have transformed their life from one of being underprivileged, to one of some success to very successful. Often they become leaders in their local communities, advocating for others who still face the same poverty and hopelessness. Historically, most immigrants to America pre-1900 were "underprivileged poor" and they built the United States into a great nation, through the industrial revolution and age of technology. Even today, many immigrants come to the US from underprivileged countries and work hard to support themselves, better their lives, and bring their families to the US.

For those who remain in an "underprivileged" position in society, they often do face harder lives. They may have low incomes or live in poverty. They may make bad choices because they lack the opportunity to obtain meaningful jobs with a good wage. *Some* (not all) turn to drugs and alcohol. They may struggle to feed their families and to pay monthly bills. They often live in sub-standard housing or public housing and often are surrounded by "the criminal element"--often the youngest generations must fight against peer pressure to take an easy road in life and engage in criminal activity. IF the person has never been valued for their intellect, their skills, their gifts, they may not even recognize that they do have abilities to create a different life from the one they grew up in. *Some* may have given up and think hopelessness is all there is in life.
