Gold plate is a layer of gold thinner than paper. Gold filled is made of gold, but hollow, and the hollow is filled with another metal. Gold filled has much more gold.

first question ...do you folks have a preference for gold filled or vermeil? I have heard that vermeil doesn't hold up any better than plating ...? ...also, I have some gold plated pewter that wears off so quickly, I wouldn't dare sell anything made of it ...can I treat it with something to prolong the gold plating? I wore a necklace for a total of maybe 15 hours and the plating wore off enough to make the beads grey & dull ...how can I sell that? I'm so disappointed in gold plated pewter but I'm also afraid plated brass would tarnish so quickly .
Will 14k gold come off sterling silver?
It depends upon the process used to bond the gold to the silver. If it is plated (an electo-chemical process that attracts a very fine coating of gold to the surface of another metal) then yes, it can wear and flake. If it says gold plated or vermeil that is the case, though vermeil is better quality than plating. Now on the other hand if it is gold "filled" or "rolled" gold, it is heat and pressure bonded. That is a permanent process and can be 100's of times thicker a layer of gold than plating. It can possible wear thin, but that would take a great deal or time and wear. This metal is an excellent alternative to 14k gold- great for people with metal allergies and can not be externally differentiated from the real deal.

It would be better to buy a higer carat if it is gold filled-aim for 18ct, 24ct rather. Gold filled is good quality on its own, and will last a lifetime with the proper care. Eg, 9ct gold will last you 20years whereas 24ct gold will last you 50years. Stronger/higher carat gold bonded lasts longer. But than again, the 24ct looks very yellow.

925 Italy means your bracelet was: made in Italy, it's 92.5% pure sterling silver, 7.5% infused alloy metal (possibly copper) and gold plated. -JagiMonster I believe that the above answer is correct for the most part, however since it was made in Italy and it is 925 sterling, the gold could be gold filled or vermeil both of which are much, much better than gold plated. You would have to ask a jewler. I know that there is an FAS jewelry school in Ireland. They may have one in Italy as well but I'm not certain.
