Because the FDA has little control over the $50 billion dollar industry of cosmetics the only feat that the FDA could put a stop too was 'Mercury' in many cosmetics. Yes, there is whale fat, but also fish scales in those nice shiny, flecked lipsticks young women like to wear and there is a small amount of lead, but according to the FDA such a low amount it will not harm or cause cancer in humans. Since the FDA has admitted they have little control over cosmetic companies because of 'loop holes,' it's possible that that statement is not entirely accurate. Even though there are many stores that carry natural cosmetics this doesn't mean they don't have ingredients in them that can possibly harm a person. Some cosmetic companies have joined the 'safe costmetics organization' and stand behind their products.
yes and it depends which type of lipstick
----
Not usually. Lipsticks are primarily made of wax and oils (like olive oil) combined with pigments.
Many matte' (not glossy) lipsticks are made without the use of animal fat. Glossy lipsticks, however, commonly use animal fats (usually pig) to give them a shiny appearance. It's possible to achieve this look without using animal fat. Some brands use various oils instead.
Using animal byproducts are never necessary in cosmetics. Whale oil from the fat is used to give you that long lasting shine. There are many organic cosmetics companies that do this naturally without using animals or testing on animals.
