Yes, the bacteria attach to the cilia of the respiratory epithelial cells, produce toxins that paralyze the cilia, and cause inflammation of the respiratory tract. In very young children pneumonia can be a secondary problem. They often have to hospitalized. Complications resulting from the pressure effects of severe "coughing fits" include pneumothorax, epistaxis, subdural hematomas and fractured ribs.
