It depends because there are drawbacks to both operating systems. I use both Mac and Windows, so I know about them both. Macs are naturally resilient to viruses, has a very graphical user interface, and although expensive, it will last longer and DOES NOT REQUIRE A WHOLE IT CREW FOR MAINTENANCE. However, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING FUN ON A MAC, unless you're playing blizzard games. Windows starts out cheap, and you don't have to hire an IT crew if you don't go to places like malicious porn sites. But you still will have to spend time and money looking for good anti-virus software. So if you plan do only do school stuff, do it on a Mac! If you wanna game or do something else fun, do it on Windows!
Some good used Windows laptop can be found online at the Amazon website and the E-bay website. Both website contain a lot of used Windows laptop for sale.
A windows 7 is good. so is HP, Compaq, and Toshiba.
Install windows 8 on your new laptop. Simple!
I recommend a Dell laptop. I would say either a vostro or a inspiron. I would recommend inspiron though not too expensive, speedy, looks good, and has good speifications and is also a home laptop. You can also get it with Windows 7 on it too.
You should go with a Windows laptop if you enjoy gaming. If you do not, then go with a Mac because it is much more easier to use. You should always check your needs and customize your laptop from company's websites.
I personally use windows and well, haven't had the best experiences with it, but that was my desktop. I hear that windows laptops are better. Well good luck with whatever you choose.
The most likely reason is that your laptop does not meet the system requirements for Windows XP.

This depends on how you want to "connect" them. If you install and configure Samba on the laptop, it can share files with Windows. If you are not interested in sharing files, but just want to control the laptop from within Windows, install an SSH server on the laptop, and connect to it from Windows using puTTY.
