Yes, if it is not cared for well it decays faster. Wood is a carbon compound. All carbon compounds (people and animals included) all decay when we die. I'm sure cutting down a tree counts as killing it, because it can no longer get nutrients to sustain it.

Normally it takes 3-5 months for wood to decay but you have to think of the variables like:

Is it exposed to weather or is it protected?

Has it been preserved or finished in some way?

How big is it dimensionally? Sawdust or wood chips will decay alot faster then a log will :)

Wood oxidizes in much the same way that iron does. If it oxidizes fast enough, it burns.
