This depends on the density of the shelving. There are Metal Wire Shelving Units that will be considerably lighter than wooden shelving, but there are also heavy duty shelving units that will be considerably lighter. Determine the maximum amount you want to store on the shelves then find a suitable shelving unit to use.

Over time, plastic holds up better than wood without maintanance. However, wood shelving is stronger, sturdier and generally more stable if it is kept in a dry environment and is properly maintained.

It depends on which wood and which metal. For example, the wood lignum vitae is approx 2.5 times as dense as the metal lithium.
