Is working at home generally lucrative?

I work at home as my primary means of support, and have tried many different methods such as content providing, tutoring, survey taking, ad viewing, and mystery shopping. It is not lucrative. Working at home means you are essentially starting your own business, and starting any business involves a lot of work for very little pay for the early stages of the business. Some small business owners I know say this can take five years. There are benefits to it, such as increased free time and setting your own hours, and no commuting costs or time, but in general it pays rather less than traditional jobs.
