The Kinect is the consumer end product of Project Natal. Since it's inception the Project has developed several implementation of which the kinect is the only one to be released to the public.
The project made many implementations with different technologies, and some were far more advanced and accurate than the current kinect, but were not commercially viable as the cost to consumers would be greater than what researchers expected people to pay for the experience on their XBox360.
