You is a pronoun, a word that replaces a noun, which is a person, place, thing, or idea. Example (for this example, your name is Mark):

'Mark, you must have dropped this book; it has your name inside the cover.'

The word you replaces the word Mark because I wouldn't say, 'Mark must have dropped...' when I was talking to you.
