I was looking at the 2000 Mercury Sable Owner Guide and it shows :
( AX4N , used with Vulcan and Duratec 3.0 liter V6 engines )
( AX4S , used with Vulcan 3.0 liter V6 engine )
I BELIEVE that is the ( 4R70W ) with the 4.6 liter and the ( 4R100 ) with the 5.4 liter
maybe R75 4.6L engine has 4R70W and the 5.4L has the 4R75W
In a 2000 Ford Expedition : If you have the 4.6 L , V8 ( it's the 4R70W ) If you have the 5.4 ( it's the 4R100 )
If equipped with 4R70W transmission =- Yes
If you check the information sticker on the end of the drivers door : under " TR " is the transmission code I believe " U " is for the 4R70W automatic transmission and " E " is for the 4R100 automatic transmission . The transmission dipstick or the handle should have the type of transmission fluid to use , the 4R70W takes Motorcraft MERCON - V , and the 4R100 takes Motorcraft MERCON according to the owners manual That's the 2 ways I can think of
Transmission fluid change intervals vary with different make/model/year/transmissions. If the vehicle doesn't have a dipstick the fluid is lifetime and never needs changing. Example of some ford trans. fluid intervals: 2000- vehicles with dipstick and (AX4S, AX4N, 4R70W, 4R100, 4F27E) have 30,000miles service intervals 2010- vehicles with TORQSHIFT transmissions have 60,000mile service intervals
For a 2000 Ford Expedition : The 4.6 liter V8 engine uses the ( 4R70W ) The 5.4 liter V8 engine uses the ( 4R100 )
There are 2 automatic transmissions for that truck. The lighter duty 4R70W (or AOD-E) was usually put behind the 4.2L V6 and some of the 4.6L V8's. The 4R100 (or E4OD) was put behind the 5.4L and the balance of the 4.6s. The easiest way to distinguish is to look at the transmission pan. The 4R70W has a mostly square pan, with the front two corners being angled-off. The 4R100 has a rectangular pan with one corner cut out.
According to the 1999 Ford Expedition owners manual : 4R70W ( which would have been used with the 4.6 liter V8 engine ) 4R100 ( which would have been used with the 5.4 liter V8 engine )

I was checking the 2000 Ford Expedition Owner Guide and it shows the transmission fluid requirements are indicated on the transmission dipstick or the dipstick handle . Either ( Motorcraft MERCON-V for the 4R70W ) or ( Motorcraft MERCON for the 4R100 )
The 2001 F-150 owners manual shows : ------------------------------------------------------- Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid for the 5 speed manual transmission and the 4R100 automatic transmission and ---------------------------------------------------------- Motorcraft MERCON V for the 4R70W automatic transmission ------------------------------------------------------------ The automatic transmission dipstick will indicate which fluid is used
