Dont be cheap and buy your kid the notebook (but feel free to hang it around his neck).
I agree but the problem with getting a netbook is that you can't expect everyone to bring a netbook as it costs a lot more than pens or calculators. I think the only way to successfully bring computers in the classroom is if it is school-issued property.
